Summer Reading 2019-20
All Students regardless of 1st or 2nd semester must submit their summer reading on or before August 21st. If your schedule assigns you the course in the 2nd semester, please drop off your 1984 notes to the folder on my door (433) and share with me your summaries of Grit on (or before) the first day of school in August (August 21st).

1984 by George Orwell
Take 6 pages (each side of a sheet of looseleaf = 1 page) of handwritten notes about the novel. Notes can include annotations of plot and character details, questions you have, observations or connections that you find interesting or relate to current political or social systems in 2019. Notes must be handwritten on looseleaf paper, connect to page numbers in the book, and be your own thoughts.
**There will be a written test and group presentation on the novel that will be explained the first class.

Grit by Angela Duckworth
Choose 3 chapters (from 1-12) and for each of the 3 chapters you choose -  write a 350 word analysis of the chapter with at least 3 parenthetical citations (this means a Works Cited page as well). Please share your Google Doc with me with editing privileges on or before August 21st regardless of the semester you have the course.
**There will be a written test and an essay on the book that will be assigned at the first class meeting.

Textbooks
English 101 and 102 textbooks are available new and used from the Trident Bookstore in North Charleston. They have used copies but don't wait until August! I would recommend calling first to check hours operation: bookstore.tridenttech.edu
The textbooks are available elsewhere (Textbook Brokers, Craigslist, BarnesandNoble.com, Amazon) and may even be rented. Please do not choose a kindle/ebook version.
